Helping our community to help our schools

Bank for Education is a program designed to help Hawaii’s schools. It enables us to work with the community to help ensure that our keiki are provided with the tools that they need to succeed.

We recognize the value of education and look to provide support where and when we can. Through Bank for Education, American Savings Bank is committed to award up to $500,000 to Hawaii’s schools. We will contribute up to $400,000 as a result of customer designations, and award an additional $100,000 to the school receiving the most designationsA during the program period.

How Bank for Education Works

  • During the period of January 2 through February 28, 2010, family and friends open qualified checking accounts B or safe deposit boxes
  • Customers identify the school that they would like to support
  • A contribution of $25C is made to the designated school
  • Participation is open to all public and private schools throughout the state, and schools must offer services/courses to at least one of the following student groups: kindergarten through 12; View a list of participating schools.

Eligible Accounts

  1. A. The school with the highest number of designations at the end of the promotion receives $100,000. If there are multiple schools with the highest number of designations at the end of the promotion, that is, a tie, then American Savings Bank will choose from among those schools, one school by random drawing to receive the $100,000.
  2. B. New checking account with payroll or government direct deposit, opened during the campaign period. First direct deposit must be received by March 31, 2010.
  3. C. $50 maximum contribution per primary accountholder. Business accounts are not eligible to participate.

Q: When does the Bank for Education program start?

A: The Bank for Education program begins on Saturday, January 2, 2010 and runs through Sunday, February 28, 2010.

Q: Are all schools eligible to participate?

A: Yes, all private and public schools in Hawaii are eligible to participate, as long as they provide services/courses to at least one of the following student groups: K through 12.

Q: What if the school that I want to designate is not included in the list?

A: Not an issue. When you open your checking account or safe deposit box, simply notify our bank staff of the school you want to support and it will be added. (Note: Schools will need to meet the eligibility requirement.)

Q: What checking accounts are eligible for the Bank for Education program?

A: The accounts eligible for the Bank for Education program include our personal ASB Free Checking and ASB Interest Checking accounts with payroll or government Direct Deposit , and Safe Deposit Boxes.

Q: Are Safe Deposit Boxes available at all American Savings Bank branches?

A: Safe Deposit Boxes are available at many of our branch locations and in a variety of sizes. View a list of branches with Safe Deposit Boxes.

Q: How will I know how my school is doing?

A: After January 2010, go to asbhawaii.com – we’ll post information on each school’s progress on a weekly basis.

Q: When will schools receive the funds that were raised for them through the Bank for Education program?

A: We expect to have final results on this effort by mid-April 2010. Thereafter, we will be able to notify the schools of the funds that were raised on their behalf and make the final awards.

Q: For what purpose can schools use the funds that are raised?

A: American Savings Bank does not restrict the use of the funds. Schools can determine how best to use the funds, including for the purchase of teaching supplies, books, musical instruments, athletic equipment and funding field trips.
