American Savings Bank announced the opening of its Downtown Branch in a refreshed, modern space just steps from its previous location within the American Savings Bank Tower in Downtown Honolulu. “The way people bank has changed, and our spaces are changing with it,” said Dani Aiu, Executive Vice President of Consumer Banking at American Savings Bank. “This refreshed Downtown branch was designed to feel open and welcoming so customers can easily connect with our bankers and have real conversations about their financial goals. Downtown Honolulu has long been an important community for us, and we’re excited to continue serving customers here in a space designed for how they prefer to bank.”

Interior of Downtown Branch

A distinctive design feature of the branch is the use of repurposed Albizia wood, an invasive tree species that threatens Hawaii’s native ecosystem and watersheds. The reclaimed wood has been transformed into modern architectural elements throughout the branch, including the teller line, furniture, and interior design features, giving new life to a material typically viewed as an environmental challenge.

Continuing a Long History of Serving Downtown Honolulu

American Savings Bank has served the Downtown Honolulu community for decades. The branch originally opened in 1973 as State Savings & Loan Association, one of the building’s original tenants. First Nationwide acquired State Savings & Loan in 1985, and American Savings Bank later acquired First Nationwide branches in 1990.

Previously known as ASB’s Main Branch, the new location has been renamed Downtown Branch to better reflect its central location.

The refreshed branch was designed by architect Dean Sakamoto and built by Ralph S. Inouye Co., Ltd.

American Savings Bank operates 35 branches across five islands and offers service seven days a week through its Customer Banking Center, except bank holidays.
