The Story of Kalo
The kalo (taro) is a sacred plant in Hawaiian culture and represents growth and unity. Living in an island state requires that we take care of one another and work together in order to thrive. Much like the kalo roots that are interwoven in a loi kalo (taro patch), ASB is deeply rooted in our communities and we are committed to supporting the health and well-being of Hawaii’s residents.
The land upon which the ASB Campus sits was once filled with lush loi kalo, nourished by the Nuuanu Stream, which still flows alongside our building today. Just as the loi previously provided sustenance and life to the residents of this special area, we remain committed to doing our part to provide abundance and growth to the Chinatown/Kalihi-Palama neighborhoods and all the communities we serve.
Kalo reminds us of Hawaii's deep cultural roots, and of American Savings Bank's commitment to the healthy growth of our community and this beautiful place we call home.

Our Leadership
ASB is led by President and CEO Ann Teranishi and a team of Executive Vice Presidents (EVP) who are responsible for specific functions and divisions of the bank, including Consumer Banking, Marketing and Product Management, Finance, Commercial Banking, Credit, Enterprise Risk and Regulatory Relations, Technology, Operations and Administration.
ASB at a Glance
Increasing Supply and Access to Affordable Housing in Hawaii
We believe local families should be able to build a future here at home. That’s why American Savings Bank works to address Hawaii’s housing challenges from multiple angles, helping increase the supply of affordable homes while making homeownership more accessible for local families.
In July 2023, ASB launched “This is HOMESM,” a first-of-its kind affordable financing solution for first-time homebuyers designed to help hardworking kamaaina buy a home in Hawaii – so they can stay in Hawaii.
ASB has invested $92 million in 28 low-income housing tax credit projects and provided funding that helped bring 537 affordable housing units to market. We also made a $2 million impact investment in Hawaii Community Lending to support new home construction and launched the Hui Kapili Accelerator to help local contractors build their capacity to develop more affordable homes.
Our work extends to the path to homeownership, including affordable mortgage products, partnerships with housing organizations, and financial education and coaching designed to help local families become homebuyer-ready.

Uplifting Our Community Through Financial Education
Financial education can open doors, from a keiki learning how to save to a family preparing to buy its first home. ASB provides tools, education and support to help Hawaii residents build financial stability and move toward long-term financial security.
Our Bank for Education KeikiCo Business Plan Competition introduces students to entrepreneurship and financial concepts while challenging them to turn their ideas into real-world business plans. Beyond the classroom, ASB teammates provide financial education in the community, and we offer digital tools and resources that make financial guidance accessible to people wherever they are in their financial journey.
From opening a first account and building credit to preparing for homeownership and building wealth, we’re here to help make the next financial step possible.

Supporting Small Businesses

At American Savings Bank, supporting local is part of how we help Hawaii thrive. Through our Buy Local HawaiiSM program, ASB customers enjoy exclusive offers at more than 150 participating merchants across the state—helping them save money while keeping dollars circulating in our communities.
Since its launch, Buy Local HawaiiSM has helped customers save more than $1.5 million while connecting them with the small businesses, restaurants, and entrepreneurs that make Hawaii special. By making it easier and more rewarding to shop local, we’re helping strengthen Hawaii’s businesses and economy, one purchase at a time.

Investing In Our Neighborhood
Our commitment to community starts right outside our doors. Since opening ASB Campus, we have worked alongside community partners and neighbors to help revitalize Aala Park and the surrounding Chinatown, Kalihi, and Palama communities through financial support, volunteerism, and long-term partnerships.
Our work includes collaborating with Trust for Public Land and other community stakeholders on the future of Aala Park, supporting community events and activations, and helping build a network of neighbors and organizations committed to creating a vibrant, welcoming neighborhood for generations to come.
2015 to date
- Invested more than $1.31 million toward providing family-friendly activities - from free fitness classes in the park to youth skateboard clinics and community fairs
- 10,900+ teammate volunteer hours

Investing in Hawaii’s Future
In 2025, as American Savings Bank celebrated 100 years of serving Hawaii, we launched the ASB Charitable Foundation to deepen our investment in the communities we call home.
The Foundation builds on a century of giving by supporting organizations and initiatives addressing some of Hawaii’s most pressing needs, with a focus on creating meaningful, lasting impact. To mark its launch, ASB committed $100,000 to Hawaii nonprofits aligned with our community impact priorities.
